Simple Ways to Track Your Business Goals (Tools, Paper, or Spreadsheet)
Tracking can feel daunting, and you may not know how to start. Here are a few approaches, in increasing complexity, that you could try. It only takes a few minutes a day or week to do this, and it really does help you stay on track.
- Use the data/tools you already have. I touched on this in my newsletter about looking back. If you have exercise or sleep goals, just use the dashboards with your smart watch. If you use financial software you can track all kinds of financial metrics. Marketing software can track your funnel success. Leverage what you are already paying for.
- Use paper. If you are tech-averse, or want a fast way to get started, grab a piece of paper. Decide if you are tracking weekly or monthly, what you are tracking (it should fall out of your goals), then just use check marks or simple units to track. Summarize when you hit the end of the time period. Start again. You’ll get what you need, I guarantee you.
- Build a tracker in a spreadsheet. Or Word. Doesn’t really matter what tool, just start, and adjust as you go along. I like Excel and pivot tables as my main custom-built tracker, for a more complex business you might consider Airtable.
This is an area where businesses often need support – really knowing what is going on and if they are hitting targets. If this is your business and you don’t know how to use your dashboards, or Excel is a scary program for you, I can help with that.
