Just do it is easy to say. But when you are stuck, “just do it” seems too simplistic for the problems you think you see. My favourite way to overcome this is to agree with myself to do the very first step, the easiest step. The way I finally got unstuck with my start-up was to  commit to go to my desk every morning for one week. That’s it – no goals for what I would do when I got there, just show up for myself.

If you are stuck getting restarted on exercise – just commit to putting on your exercise gear. Or walking to the end of your driveway. There is actually a lot of behavioural science behind why this technique works. Committing to something small removes the decision-making load on your brain, and also lowers your resistance – you know you can do a small not-scary thing. We are wired to continue, so once you start, it’s quite likely that you’ll keep going. And even just a small step forward restores context, and helps you remember why and how you were doing the activity.

Getting stuck in your business is very stressful, especially if it’s your livelihood. Overthinking your offers, your pricing, and your marketing can stop you from generating revenue. You can get stuck on tool choice, like choosing a CRM, or making process changes you know need to scale but are out of your comfort zone, and these can keep you from feeling in control. As in my example, you can just – start. Get one piece moving, or have someone help you get unstuck. Once you start, things will usually move forward naturally.

And if you are still struggling to figure out where to get started, a short consultation can help clarify your next steps.
